In the fast-paced work world today, we hear about new software, apps, and various other tips and tricks to help your business run more efficiently and effectively. But, how often do we think about the long-term impact of these offerings? Today, Doug Mattingly, the creator of BizLabs, is here to share what the future looks like for companies of all sizes and how it may be time for them to rethink how they run their business.
First and foremost, why do you believe the office atmosphere is changing? What is driving the change?
Doug: Technology is driving the change, especially communication technology. When I entered the workforce some years ago, we had phones on most desks, a computer room or lab that housed a few computers and there was no internet. To communicate with someone, you had to be sitting at your desk or meet them in person. Things are different today and they continue to evolve. We carry our computers and personal communications devices with us anywhere we want. Desk phones can be moved to a different desk by pressing a button on a website. Productive meetings can be held with all participants in different cities. Communications are much more flexible and our office space is evolving to become more flexible as well.
In what ways do traditional offices lack what is required to grow your business and be successful in the future?
Doug: Primarily, it’s all about flexibility. Rapid response to today’s dynamic business environment requires flexibility. And it doesn’t hurt that flexible office space can be significantly less expensive!
What industries do you see benefiting the most from virtual/dedicated office spaces? Why?
Doug: Industries dealing in knowledge benefit most from virtual office spaces. Professional services provided by attorneys, accountants, engineers, and consultants benefit greatly from flexible space. Manufacturing and construction industries may have some obvious challenges in working with virtual office spaces, but their sales teams may be one of the best candidates due to their mobility and dynamic environment.
How are virtual/dedicated office spaces “the future of “work”? Do you think more companies will follow the trend of virtual/dedicated office spaces?
Doug: Absolutely. As more business leaders begin to see the advantages, I believe virtual office space will continue to grow to meet demand. Additionally, new technology will continually add new capabilities and new advantages for the flexible virtual office.
Who benefits more from virtual/dedicated office spaces - the employers, employees, overall company? All?
Doug: I would have to say “all”. Employers benefit from a responsive business environment and cost savings. Employees benefit from a flexible, enjoyable lifestyle and the overall company benefits from increased options.
What is essential to bringing your company “into the future”? What is the first step companies should make?
Doug: First, it is essential to learn and understand the benefits of a virtual office and how to get the most out of it. Becoming knowledgeable about how to best utilize a workspace to meet your needs is essential to generate results for your business. If you’re hesitant, there are many resources found on our site providing information on how a virtual office can meet your needs no matter what industry you are in. And when you’re ready, give it a try – you’ll be surprised at how small the investment is and how immediate the benefits can be.
